Home insurance

The 4 main challenges caused by floods

What is flood insurance? It is a risk management tool available for homeowners and property owners to protect themselves in the event of a flood disaster affecting their property. Flood insurance is primarily purchased by people who own properties in areas with a higher risk of flooding.

However, people who own properties in moderate to low risk areas are also advised to purchase flood insurance to be safer. This is because floods are a natural disaster that can occur anywhere and at any time. Floods can arise as a result of various situations, for example, during heavy storms, poor drainage systems, burst water pipes, and many more. Some of the challenges caused by flooding include:

· Communicable diseases related to water

The calamity of floods causes water-related and vector-borne diseases like bilharzia, cholera, diarrhea and hepatitis E, which can be very fatal to man. These diseases occur when disinfected water systems become contaminated by broken sewage pumps and therefore the water becomes contaminated for drinking and domestic use as it may raise fears of water-related diseases.

· Destruction of properties and crops

Floods as a natural disaster also cause massive destruction of property and crops. Home and property owners account for many losses during these tragedies. Some insurance companies advise their clients on the benefits of purchasing flood insurance to help them rebuild their lives after the ordeal.

· Human and animal deaths.

Floods also cause loss of life. As a result of this natural disaster, humans and animals die. People living along lakes and rivers, people living near the base of a hill or mountain are prone to the risks of being affected by floods. On top of that, animals are swept away and die in the process when this calamity arises.

· Damage to infrastructure

Floods also affect electricity and road transport. Movement from one place to another becomes almost impossible. In turn, the electricity is cut off. The government has to adopt measures or rather agreements to remedy this situation.

In conclusion, it is necessary to take preventive measures, especially if you live in flood-prone areas. Better safe than sorry. You should purchase a flood insurance policy to ensure you are covered when such a situation occurs or move to an area that is less prone to flooding.
